Expertise

Dr Michael Meissner advises credit institutions (banks), financial services firms, asset management and private equity funds as well as payment services providers in all areas of financial regulation, with a focus on their compliance, anti-money laundering, risk management and governance processes, including legal representation with measures by supervisory authorities. Further, he is providing compliance and regulatory advice.

Dr Meissner’s legal advice in particular covers the following:

  • Compliance, data protection, cybersecurity und internal control functions pursuant to the German Banking Act (KWG), German Money Laundering Act (GwG), German Minimum Requirements for Risk Management (MaRisk), German Minimum Requirements for the Compliance Function (MaComp) and German Supervisory Requirements for IT in Financial Institutions (BAIT) as well as the ECB’s Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) together with its Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process (SREP)
  • Appointment of board members, directors, money laundering reporting offices, compliance officers, data protection officers, and chief legal counsel in the financial services industry, public sector and aviation industry
  • Special on-site audits by financial supervisory authorities, internal and criminal investigations in the areas of anti-financial crime as well as anti-fraud, including anti-corruption advice
  • Compliance- and anti-financial crime trainings as well as short-term interim roles as chief legal counsel/general counsel, chief compliance officer, anti-money laundering reporting officer and securities compliance officer in the financial services industry, the public sector and the aviation industry

After his German Second State Law Examination, Dr Meissner earned a PhD at Saarland University with a comparative study on the corporate right to privacy and then graduated from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law with a Master in Laws (LL.M.). Subsequent to taking the New York State Bar Examination and commencing his legal practice at one of London’s Magic Circle firms, his career in banking and financial law included partner roles with international law firms in Frankfurt am Main and Munich. After an appointment as chief compliance officer of a bank for almost a decade, he moved to the Dickson Poon School of Law of King’s College London. At King’s he is teaching the modules „EU and US Financial Regulation“, „Financial Products“, „Capital Markets“ and „Navigating International Financial Regulation and Compliance“ in a full-time role.
